Developmental leadership - a servant to the collective

A Developmental leader is a servant to the collective intelligence, supporting the outcome to be greater than the “sum of its parts”, rather than being a self serving leader. Developmental leadership is more about being in service to the greater good and to people. Conventional, and in the worst case Destructive leadership, is more about an explicit self serving leadership. Seeing people as a means to an end.

The model, Developmental Leadership, gives us a valuable GPS to navigate with. An important reminder is that the three different approaches are based on a frequency of behaviours over time. We are  not a specific type of leader. We have all types within us. A leader who often demonstrates developmental leadership behaviours may, perhaps under stress, revert back to conventional behaviours.

Using the model as a map and a compass, we can notice, without judgement, what behaviours we use, and we can foresee which individual and organisational effects these will generate. When we know better, we can be and do better. We can consciously make a choice. That is the power and freedom of knowledge.

If we update our fundamental values, beliefs and behaviours to be aligned with the 21st Century challenges, then we will, step by step, move from positional power to relational empowerment and fully embrace a life affirming leadership approach.

A Developmental and Regenerative leader sees the wider fabric of life and will seize every opportunity to constructively contribute to life´s evolution, catalyzing and spawning new systems and structures that create more value than they take, rather than being content by merely reducing negative impact. A Developmental and Regenerative leader lives beyond the illusion of separation and practises a leadership to create organizations which contribute to life-affirming futures for all, including our planet.
